What is exactly backstage burlesque?
Hello, my name is Zora Jurenkova. I’m a Berlin-based photographer of burlesque dancers and a founding member of Germany’s first burlesque comedy and go-go group, ‘The Teaserettes’. I still perform as my stage alter-ego, ‘Miss Popalina’.
For the past five years, I’ve been working on a project called BACKSTAGE BURLESQUE.
I’m excited to announce that I’ve now finished selecting my very best behind the scenes photographs of the finest neo-burlesque artists.
The images reflect the passionate, glamorous and playful scenes of the burlesque world without an audience: sometimes unobserved and thoughtful, sometimes raw and seductive. But always pure.
I spent many years partying, performing and taking pictures backstage. Over the last 5 years in particular, my photography has focused on capturing images of the amazing stars and starlets of the burlesque scene – mostly in Berlin, but also in Hamburg, Prague, Paris and beyond. I have cooperated with several eminent international producers of renowned burlesque shows. A lot of my snapshots were taken backstage at the ‘Teaserettes’Burlesque Circus Freak Shows.
Glamour, glitter and queer entertainment
Several shots were taken are from the Berlin Burlesque Festival and Vaudeville Variety Burlesque revues at the beautiful Wintergarten variety theatre in Berlin. Others show backstage images from the Hamburg Burlesque Festival, the Bohemian Burlesque Festival, Pinky’s Peep Show, Berlin Burlesque Week, Der Grüne Engel, Bananas Dada Club and several other key events in the burlesque calendar..
